FIRE and EVACUATION POLICY
I have fire alarms and a heat sensor fitted and I check regularly that they are in working order .
I have a fire blanket .
I do not use appliances if they are faulty .
I discuss with children and students what happens in case of a fire .We do practice evacuations.
I explain to the children what will happen so that they are not frightened or confused.
I warn the children then set off the alarm.
This ensures that the children associate the sound with leaving the building.
Children are encouraged to leave the house quietly, sensibly but quickly. Older children will be encouraged to hold the hand of younger children and babies and non mobile children will be carried by myself or my assistant / student.
We will gather in a safe place, usually towards the back of the garden, near or in the summer house.
In the event of a real fire or emergency I would determine the safest way of evacuating the building and get the children out straight away.
Fire exits include front door, back door and fully opening windows in front room and kitchen.
I would encourage older children to help younger children and I would carry those not old enough or able enough to walk out.
I would take the children a safe distance from the fire and either raise the alarm by shouting, knocking on neighbour’s door or telephoning the emergency services using my mobile.
I will keep calm and comfort the children as I understand they may become frightened and upset.
I will check everyone is out safely.
Once children are safely out of the building and all accounted for and emergency services are called I will then contact back up childminders or other trusted adult to provide help.
I would then contact parents to arrange collection of their child/children.
